Gregor Mendel held several jobs before he started conducting his experiments in genetics. In 1849 he started teaching math and Greek at the grammar school in Znojmo. In 1854 he was appointed teacher of physics and natural history in the Technical School. Mendel remained at this job until 1868, when he was elected abbot of the monastery.
